Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL)

Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL).

At Naboisho Action Network, we implement the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach as an accelerated learning program in four public primary schools: Meto Primary, Loltiamiloi Primary, Empukani Primary, and Ilmolelian Primary.

The program targets learners in Grades 2, 3, and 4 who are struggling with foundational literacy and numeracy. Instead of following the standard grade-based curriculum, we assess each child’s actual learning level and group them into four levels: Beginner (Letter), Word, Paragraph, and Story.

TaRL sessions run for one hour every day after regular school hours, focusing on interactive, level-based learning activities that help children catch up and gain confidence in reading and basic math.

Key features of our TaRL program include:

Teacher training: Classroom teachers receive practical training to improve their delivery of the TaRL content and methodology.

Head teacher involvement: School heads are trained to support ongoing monitoring and sustainability of the program within their schools.

Instructional materials: We supply each school with level-specific teaching and learning materials to support effective implementation.

School integration: Many partner schools have introduced additional daily reading lessons to complement TaRL and further strengthen learners’ literacy skills.

Through this model, we are helping to bridge learning gaps, especially in marginalized and low-performing classrooms, and ensuring more children have the skills they need to thrive in school.
